UNITED/CONTINENTAL NAVIGATES CONVERSION

  Millions of booking records were merged into a single United reservations system this past weekend as the final stage of combining United and Continental into the world’s largest carrier went into effect. Some passengers who traveled during this process experienced longer check-in times due to technical glitches and did not receive timely assistance from customer representatives. United anticipated some passenger inconvenience citing on-time stats which fluctuated over the weekend but quickly recovered to 90% by Monday. (Travelmole.com, March 8)

NAVIGATING AROUND BAGGAGE FEES

Continental and Delta Airlines will waive the fee for your first checked bag ($50 roundtrip) when you use their airline credit cards to purchase your ticket. This applies to all members of your group traveling together for up to 9 people. But, there is a caveat. Those credit cards come with annual fee: $85 for Continental’s and $95 for Delta’s. Continental Airlines has introduced daily nonstop flights between Newark, NJ and Munich, Germany. Continental’s service complements that of partner Lufthansa who already operates nonstops from Munich to Newark. (ETurbonews.com, March 26)..

When checking in online, prior to arrival at the airport, your printed boarding pass is now sponsored by paid advertisers whose ads are featured on your printed check-in document. US Airways has joined Delta in charging businesses for the privilege of exposure to ticketed passengers. (USAToday.com, March 29)

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES TO CHARGE FOR FOOD

The free food that Continental Airlines used to boast about won’t be free anymore come this fall. Continental plans to launch a food-for-sale program that mirrors what other carriers are already doing. A spokesman said that the airlines, based in Houston, expects a $35 million annual benefit from cost savings and added revenue. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, US Airways and United Airlines are among carriers that already charge for food on flights. Continental passengers on some international routes, on domestic flights over six hours and those who sit in first or business class on routes worldwide will continue to get free food. Continental Airlines now flies non-stop flights between L.A. and Maui and Orange County and Maui. The carrier also will add more flights to Honolulu from both L.A. and Orange County. (Eturbonews.com, March 5) . . . United begins daily non-stop service from Washington, Dulles to Accra, Ghana on June 2. (USAToday.com, March 5) . . . JetBlue has cut its new aircraft acquisitions from 8 to 5 for 2011, in efforts to control expenses. (Eturbonews.com, Mar. 11)

SERVICE UPDATES

Continental will join other major domestic carriers and equip its fleet with wireless broadband. Continental plans to offer inflight Wi-Fi services to passengers by spring of 2010 in partnership with Aircell. (BTNonline.com, Dec. 18)…A new parking garage and rental car complex will be constructed at the Memphis International Airport.
