All Nippon Airways, the launch customer for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, thinks the cabins in the new-age jet should be a bit darker. ANA “says the plane’s electronic dimmable windows are not dark enough for long haul flights and has asked (Boeing) to come up with a way to make the plane’s cabin darker.” In addition to finding a solution for yet-to-be-delivered 787s, ANA also is looking into installing traditional pull-down shades on the 787s already in its fleet. Delta Air Lines is suspending its routes from Atlanta to Barcelona and Milan for the winter, saying the flights have been affected by high jet fuel costs and global economic conditions. The Atlanta-Barcelona and Atlanta-Milan routes have been operating year-round, but Atlanta-based Delta will suspend both after Oct. 26. The airline said it plans to resume the routes in late March. The days are numbered for the Continental Airlines name. In about two weeks, parent company United Continental Holdings will begin using only United for nearly all of its interaction with customers. The Continental name will begin fading in the distance as the two carriers that have merged into the world’s largest, become United. (Travel.USAToday.com, Feb. 21)
Boeing And Pakistan International Airlines announced an order for five 777-300ER airplanes. Valued at nearly $1.5 billion, the order also includes purchase rights to Pakistan International Airlines for five additional 777-300ERs. Based in Karachi, Pakistan International Airlines has been renewing its long-haul fleet to accommodate increased demand for air travel as well as to introduce new routes. (ETurboNews.com, Feb. 20)
Southwest revealed plans to blend more AirTran destinations into its own route network. The new routes were made public as Southwest announced its fall flight schedule. Among the AirTran cities getting new or additional links to the Southwest network are Des Moines and Atlanta. Southwest will also be bringing back nonstop service between Detroit and Las Vegas stating Sept. 30. (Travel.USAToday.com, Feb. 21)

Alaska Airlines announced this week that it will begin flying from its Seattle hub to Philadelphia. The carrier will begin daily round-trip service on the route starting June 11. Alaska Airlines also announced that it will switch airports for its service to South Florida. The airline will drop Miami in favor of Fort Lauderdale starting July 16. (Travel.USAToday.com, Feb. 7)
Beginning May 17, Spirit Airlines will add seasonal nonstop service between Atlanta and Atlantic City. The carrier will fly one daily round-tip flights between the cities. (Travel.USAToday.com, Feb. 5)
Air Namibia has ordered two new Airbus A319 aircraft. Seating 112 passengers in a two class layout, the aircraft will bring new levels of comfort to regional routes from Windhoek to other major African cities. (ETurboNews.com, Feb. 6)

Air Canada averted a strike which was scheduled to begin Sept. 22, by reaching a tentative contract agreement with the union representing its flight attendants. (USAToday.com, Sept. 21)
Southwest Airlines is preparing to link networks with newly acquired AirTran Airways to coordinate and optimize flight schedules at Southwest’s hub in Atlanta. The merging of networks should be completed by early next year. (AJC.com, Sept. 19)
On Oct. 1, Ryanair will increase fees for your first checked bag from 10¬£ to £15 per bag and increase the fees for excess baggage from 15¬£ to £20 per kilo. The checked bag allowance will decrease from 3 bags to 2. (BusinessTraveller.com, Sept. 7)

India is refusing to give German carrier Lufthansa permission to fly its Airbus A380 superjumbo jet to New Delhi. Reuters, says India’s decision is a retaliatory move in response to Star Alliance’s August rejection of state-owned Air India’s bid to join the frequent-flier group. The Star Alliance, the world’s largest frequent-flier grouping, counts Lufthansa as one of its cornerstone members. (USAToday.com, Sept. 13)
The FAA has proposed a $1.1 million fine against a company for alleged maintenance violations involving 44 Southwest Airlines airplanes. The fine against the company was for improperly inspecting and repairing the fuselages on Southwest’s Boeing 737-300 aircraft. (USAToday.com, Sept. 13)
Allegiant Air is adding nonstop Boeing 757 service from Las Vegas to Knoxville, Tennessee and Lexington, Kentucky. The carrier will fly two flights a week on both routes. The Lexington service will begin Nov. 16 and the Knoxville route starts Nov. 18. (USAToday.com, Sept. 13)

Beginning November 17, American Airlines will add nonstop services to Antigua from its hub from New York JFK. The carrier will fly four flights a week to V.C. Bird International Airport on 148-seat Boeing 737 aircraft. (Travel.USAToday.com, Aug 30)
Cathay Pacific will join the list of big airlines that offer a “premium” economy seating section. The new seats are expected to debut in March on flights between Hong Kong and Sydney, Singapore, Toronto and Shanghai. Other North American, European and Middle East destinations will follow throughout 2012. (Travel.USAToday.com, August 29)
Tanzania’s first privately-owned airline, Precision Air, has extended its schedule flights to cover southern African regional cities through Johannesburg in South Africa. Precision Air launched its first flight from Tanzania’s capital city of Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg in South Africa. The airline will be flying to South Africa four times per week from its hub in Dar es Salaam using a new Boeing 737-300 airplane. (ETurboNews.com, Aug 29)

Major carriers in the U.S. are hiring more workers as they slowly expand operations. They have increased employee numbers by 1.9% over last year, demonstrating a 7-year growth trend. (USAToday.com, Aug. 24)
United Continental plans to make substantial improvements and updates in the cabins of its aircraft fleet. The merged airline will spend $550 million to bring consistency to its product and service offerings. The combined carrier plans to install flat-bed seats, Economy Plus sections, individual on-demand entertainment systems, roomier overhead bins and new carpeting and lighting, fleet-wide, where applicable. Airports Company and Lufthansa German Airlines announced the increase of flight capacity between Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi International Airport by the end of October. The Lufthansa flights will be operated on an Airbus A330-300 aircraft with non-stop flights to Frankfurt, departing Abu Dhabi daily at 1:15am local time. (ETurboNews.com, Aug 15)
New Australian carrier, Strategic Airlines will fly two new routes between Australia and the Hawaiian islands. Service will commence December 14. Flights will operate up to three times a week and will use Airbus A330 aircraft. (ETurboNews.com, Aug. 15)
Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways celebrated 25 years of flying to the U.S. last month. ANA’s first ever flight to the U.S. came on July 16, 1986, when it began flying from Tokyo Narita to Los Angeles. Ten days later, ANA began flying from Tokyo Narita to Washington Dulles. Delta Air Lines will discontinue service in some 24 smaller markets in order to cut losses from such operations. Although the U.S. Department of Transportation subsidies carriers under the Essential Air Service program to assist in providing minimal service to smaller cities, the costs of operating flights with very few passengers onboard are prohibitive. United Continental attempted to hike domestic air fares by $4 to $10 leading into the slower Fall season. After initially adopting the increases over the weekend, other carriers are now rolling prices back, led by Southwest and American. (Hotelmarketing.com, July 19)
American Airlines and Cathay Pacific have expanded their code-sharing agreement to include Cathay Pacific’s new daily flights between Chicago and Hong Kong and current daily flights between Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. (Forbes.com, July 14)
